How Ventura’s Seasons Affect Ground Squirrel Activity
Ventura generally receives its rain during the cooler months, followed by a long dry season. These changes affect the vegetation around a property and can influence where ground squirrels search for food.
New Growth Following Winter Rain
Fresh grass and other green vegetation provide food for ground squirrels. As new growth appears during the cooler and wetter part of the year, activity may become easier to notice around lawns, planted areas, and open ground.
Activity During the Drier Months
As grasses and annual plants begin to dry and produce seeds, ground squirrels adjust what they eat. Their feeding activity may change, but established burrows can remain in use.
Changing Sightings Do Not Tell the Whole Story
Seeing fewer squirrels for a while does not always mean the burrows are empty. Ground squirrels spend much of their time underground, and their activity can change with the weather and available food. We inspect the property for current signs and determine whether treatment is appropriate.
