Ground Squirrel Activity Around Hillsides and Open Areas
Many Santa Clarita neighborhoods have residential landscaping near slopes, trails, and undeveloped areas. Ground squirrels may establish burrows along these boundaries and move into maintained portions of a property.
Open Burrows Near Fences and Slopes
Ground squirrels commonly leave visible openings in the ground. These may appear along fence lines, retaining walls, planted slopes, and other places where they can dig. We examine the openings and surrounding areas to identify where activity is taking place.
Movement Between Different Areas
You may see ground squirrels moving between burrows during the day. Sometimes the activity extends farther than the first opening you noticed. We check the accessible portions of your property to determine which burrows are active and where treatment should be focused.
Ground Squirrel Treatment for Your Property
The treatment approach depends on how many burrows are active, where they’re located, and whether the surrounding terrain affects access. We may recommend trapping, carbon monoxide treatment, or both.
Trapping
Trapping may be recommended when ground squirrels are active in particular areas of the property. We place traps in locations associated with their movement and explain whether follow-up visits will be needed.
Carbon Monoxide Treatment
For suitable burrow systems, we use specialized equipment to introduce carbon monoxide gas underground. This allows us to treat the activity inside the burrows rather than digging up the surrounding landscape.
