What Gopher Damage Can Look Like

You may notice changes in the ground or landscaping without ever seeing the gopher itself. These are some of the common reasons people contact Crosstown for service.

FRESH SOIL MOUNDS

New piles of soil are one of the more recognizable signs that a gopher has been moving dirt to the surface while burrowing below.

PLANT & ROOT DAMAGE

Gophers feed below ground and can damage roots, causing plants to weaken, disappear, or suddenly decline.

SOFT OR UNEVEN GROUND

Burrowing beneath lawns and landscaped areas can leave portions of the ground soft, raised, sunken, or uneven.

DAMAGE AROUND IRRIGATION

Burrowing can disturb soil around irrigation systems and landscaped areas, and underground plastic lines may sometimes be damaged as well.

How Gopher Service Works

We start by looking at how many mounds are present and where the freshest groups are concentrated. That helps us decide where to begin probing for the underground tunnel system.

Inspect The Property

We inspect the lawns, landscaped areas, slopes, and open spaces around the property to determine how many areas are showing gopher activity and what may need to be addressed.

Pricing Before Treatment

We inspect the area with gopher activity, explain the recommended treatment, and give you the price. You can then decide whether you’d like to move forward with service.

Complete The Treatment

Once you approve the service price, we begin the service and let you know when the approved work has been completed.

Choosing the Right Gopher Treatment

Once we locate the tunnel system in one area, we can begin treatment there before moving on to the next group of mounds. We continue working through the affected areas until the service is completed.

Carbon Monoxide Treatment

We first locate the active burrow, then use our Gopher RX machine to introduce carbon monoxide through a hose placed into the tunnel. The gas travels through the connected tunnels to treat the gopher underground, where it lives and feeds. This method does not use poison bait or depend on the gopher eating a product for treatment to work.

Trapping Service

When trapping is appropriate for the area, we locate an active tunnel and place a GopherHawk trap directly into it. The trap is designed to catch the gopher as it moves through the tunnel from either direction. This method targets the gopher underground without using poison bait or gas pellets.

Why Gophers Can Show Up Again Later

Gopher service addresses the problem we find at the time of treatment, but it cannot prevent a new gopher from moving into the area later.

Surrounding Habitat

Neighboring yards, slopes, fields, landscaped areas, and open spaces can continue to support gophers near the treated area.

New Mounds

New changes in the ground after service are worth paying attention to. Noting where and when they appear can help determine whether a new gopher may have moved into the area.

A Few Practical Things to Know

How many visits could it take to get control?

The number of visits depends on the extent of the problem, where the burrows are located, and whether new signs continue to appear. Some properties may need follow-up visits as the burrow system is evaluated and treated.

Does one mound mean there is only one gopher?

Not necessarily. One gopher can create multiple mounds, and a property can also have more than one gopher. The number of surface mounds alone does not reliably tell us how many are present.

Any precautions for children or pets?

Both trapping and carbon monoxide treatment take place below ground, so children and pets generally do not need to leave the property while service is being performed. We’ll identify the immediate work areas and let you know if there are any temporary precautions to follow during the service.

Do you treat slopes or larger properties?

Yes. Gopher service can be adapted for slopes, larger properties, and open spaces. The approach can vary depending on the terrain, accessibility, and where the activity is found.
